ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – In a historic medical breakthrough, Islamabad witnessed its first-ever robotic surgery, successfully carried out at PIMS Hospital using an advanced “Tomai” surgical robot.

The procedure marked a new chapter in Pakistan’s healthcare sector, combining modern technology with expert medical supervision. International specialists from the United Kingdom joined hands with Pakistani doctors to perform the surgery, ensuring a smooth and safe operation.
The operation was supervised by Professor Shamim Khan, Professor Mateen Sharif, and Dr. Javed Burki, while Dr. Atif Inam Shami, Dr. Burhan-ul-Haq, and Dr. Khalid Saeed from PIMS were also part of the surgical team.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Mateen Sharif, Director of Robotic Surgery at PIMS, said that robotic surgery will make complex operations safer, faster, and more precise. He added that the Tomai robot, designed in China, represents a leap forward in Pakistan’s medical capability.
“Our mission is to expand robotic surgery to hospitals across the country,” Dr. Mateen said, adding that the government is fully supporting this initiative. He further revealed that a female patient underwent the robotic operation successfully and is expected to recover much faster thanks to this new technology.
Medical experts say robotic surgery not only reduces recovery time but also minimizes risks during critical procedures, setting a strong foundation for advanced healthcare innovation in Pakistan.
