LAHORE: In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and International Human Rights Day, the Buzurg Dost Network (BDN) Punjab and the Foundation for Ageing and Inclusive Development (FAID) organized a seminar titled “Bridging Human Rights: Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Older People” on December 5, 2024.

Punjab, home to the largest proportion of Pakistan’s ageing population, faces growing challenges in addressing the needs of over 13.5 million older people, many of whom live with disabilities. Globally, 15% of the population experiences some form of disability, with this figure rising among older people.

The intersection of disability and ageing presents unique challenges requiring targeted solutions. This seminar served as a critical platform to amplify the voices of PWDs and older people, promote awareness, and advocate for disability-inclusive development in the province.

The event brought together policymakers, civil society leaders, disability rights advocates, and human rights experts to address the challenges faced by PWDs and older people in accessing equitable rights and services. The seminar emphasized actionable strategies for inclusive development and the importance of policy frameworks that meet the needs of these vulnerable populations.
