(News Desk) – A 12-member Special Parliamentary Committee has nominated Justice Yahya Afridi as next chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The session, which was not attended by the PTI and SIC, was resumed after it was deferred earlier till 8:30pm.
Justice Afridi was the third most senior judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Muneeb Afridi were also in the contention.
The development comes as the 26th amendment has recently been incorporated into the constitution of the country.
According to the amendment, the new chief justice would not be the senior most judge of the Supreme Court appointed by the President. Rather, a special committee would nominate one name and send it to the Prime Minister for his assent. The nomination would be sent to the president for its final approval.
