LAHORE – A woman was injured after jumping from a moving motorcycle to escape alleged harassment by a ride-hailing rider in Lahore’s Johar Town area, with the incident prompting renewed concerns about passenger safety and the protection of women using app-based transport services.

According to police, the incident occurred on October 17, when the woman booked a motorcycle ride from F-2 in Johar Town to Watto Palace. During the journey, the rider allegedly behaved inappropriately towards her, prompting her to jump from the moving motorcycle.

CCTV footage of the incident, which surfaced publicly on Tuesday, reportedly shows the woman jumping from the motorcycle and falling onto the road. She sustained injuries to her face, nose, throat and head in the fall.

The rider allegedly fled the scene after the woman jumped off the motorcycle, according to police.

The woman’s brother subsequently approached the authorities and lodged a complaint against the rider, following which a case was registered. Police have not publicly disclosed further details about the suspect’s identity or the latest progress of the investigation.

Investigation underway

Police are expected to investigate the allegations, examine the available CCTV footage and establish the sequence of events surrounding the incident.

The footage could provide investigators with information about the circumstances of the fall and the rider’s movements following the incident. However, the allegations against the rider will need to be examined through the legal process.

The case has also highlighted the importance of effective complaint-handling procedures when passengers report inappropriate conduct during app-based rides.

Ride-hailing services provide an important transport option for people in major cities, including women who rely on motorcycles and other vehicles to travel to work, educational institutions and other destinations. The latest incident has brought attention to the importance of ensuring passengers can complete their journeys without fear of harassment.

Another assault case raises concerns

The incident comes days after another reported attack on a woman travelling on a scooter along Mozang Link Road in Lahore.

In that case, police arrested a man accused of blocking the woman’s path, knocking her off her scooter, slapping her and pulling her hair. The woman reportedly suffered injuries to her face and nose.

The suspect, identified by police as Ghulam Mustafa, was traced with assistance from surveillance camera footage and arrested. A case was registered on the complaint of the victim’s father.

However, a judicial magistrate subsequently granted the accused post-arrest bail against a surety bond of Rs100,000 on October 24, provided he was not wanted in another criminal case.

The two incidents have renewed public discussion about women’s safety in public spaces and the need for effective action against harassment and violence.

Punjab introduces transport safety measures

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has introduced measures intended to improve passenger safety in public and app-based transport.

According to The News, QR-code panic buttons have been introduced in 82,000 rickshaws, cabs and public transport vehicles. The facility is intended to help women seek emergency assistance in cases of harassment or other threats.

Chief Traffic Officer Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said traffic teams had been working at 45 locations across the city to install the QR-code facilities. Dedicated teams had also been assigned to support installation in rickshaws.

Officials have also discussed tracking systems for online cabs and measures to bring public transport services within a stronger safety framework.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on their implementation, accessibility and the ability of passengers to obtain timely assistance when emergencies arise.

Calls for stronger passenger protection

The latest case has underscored the importance of investigating complaints promptly, preserving relevant evidence and ensuring appropriate accountability when allegations of harassment are reported.

Passengers should be able to report misconduct through accessible complaint channels, while transport operators and relevant authorities need clear procedures for responding to safety concerns.

As the investigation continues, the woman’s case has once again placed the issue of women’s security during everyday travel in the spotlight.
