US, Iran exchange conflicting claims as diplomacy replaces planned military escalation

The US and Iran issued conflicting statements on negotiations as Washington paused planned strikes, while regional diplomacy intensified to prevent further escalation.

CAIRO (Web Desk) – The United States and Iran have offered sharply different accounts over the status of diplomatic engagement after President Donald Trump announced he had suspended a planned military operation against Iran, saying negotiations offered the best opportunity to reduce tensions and restore stability in the Gulf region.

The conflicting statements underscore the uncertainty surrounding efforts to end months of confrontation that have disrupted maritime trade, heightened regional security concerns and raised fears of a broader conflict involving multiple countries.

President Trump said Washington had decided to delay what he described as a major military operation after appeals from Gulf allies, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who urged the United States to give diplomacy another opportunity.

According to Trump, negotiations with Iran represent a final chance to secure an agreement addressing concerns over Tehran’s nuclear programme and restoring unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.

However, Iran rejected the US president’s account, insisting no direct negotiations with Washington are currently taking place.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Tehran’s ongoing diplomatic contacts are limited to discussions with Oman regarding temporary arrangements for maritime navigation and regional security.

Iranian officials maintained that reports suggesting direct negotiations with the United States are inaccurate, adding that no meetings with American representatives have been scheduled.

Despite Iran’s denial, Trump insisted communication between the two countries continues, accusing Iranian leaders of sending contradictory messages about diplomatic engagement.

The disagreement comes as international attention remains focused on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passes.

Shipping activity in the waterway has slowed considerably in recent months due to military tensions, increasing transportation costs and contributing to volatility in international energy markets.

Maritime monitoring services reported limited commercial vessel movements through the strait as shipping companies continue assessing regional security risks.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Iraq to participate in Arbaeen commemorations, one of the largest annual religious gatherings for Shia Muslims.

His visit also coincides with continued regional consultations involving neighbouring countries seeking to prevent further military escalation.

At the same time, Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade began an official visit to Pakistan aimed at strengthening trade cooperation and discussing alternative transport routes for Iranian exports amid continuing regional disruptions.

Regional diplomacy also continued in Syria, where interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa met Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani in Damascus.

The leaders discussed regional security, cross-border cooperation and the growing impact of ongoing Middle East tensions on neighbouring countries.

Elsewhere, Israel continued military operations in Gaza, where additional casualties were reported following new airstrikes.

International organizations continue calling for greater humanitarian access as high temperatures worsen living conditions for displaced civilians sheltering in temporary camps across the territory.

Humanitarian agencies have warned that shortages of clean water, electricity and medical supplies are increasing health risks for thousands of displaced families.

In Iran, authorities announced the execution of two men convicted of espionage after accusing them of providing intelligence to Israel during recent military confrontations.

Iranian judicial authorities said the men supplied information allegedly used in attacks on military installations, though independent verification of the allegations has not been possible.

Political analysts say the latest developments illustrate the complex nature of the regional crisis, where diplomatic efforts continue alongside military operations and conflicting public statements.

They believe Gulf countries are attempting to reduce tensions through mediation while encouraging dialogue between regional rivals and international powers.

Energy markets also remain highly sensitive to developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, with traders closely monitoring any signs of progress or renewed confrontation.

Observers note that restoring confidence in maritime security remains essential for stabilizing global oil supplies and easing uncertainty in international markets.

Although both Washington and Tehran continue to present different narratives regarding negotiations, diplomatic contacts involving regional partners remain active, leaving open the possibility of further efforts aimed at reducing tensions and preventing a wider conflict across the Middle East.
