(Sports Desk) – The 2026 FIFA World Cup champions will receive a record $51 million in prize money as FIFA significantly increases the tournament’s overall financial rewards under the expanded 48-team format.

The governing body has allocated a total prize fund of $871 million for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making it the richest edition in the tournament’s history. The increased financial package reflects the expansion from 32 to 48 participating nations and includes additional funding to support teams’ preparation and travel.

According to FIFA’s prize structure, the tournament winners will earn $51 million, while the runners-up will receive $34 million. The third-placed team will collect $30 million, with the fourth-placed side taking home $28 million.

Every nation qualifying for the World Cup is guaranteed financial support. Each of the 48 participating football associations will receive at least $12.5 million, including $10 million for qualifying and competing in the tournament, along with $2.5 million to help cover pre-tournament preparation and training costs.

Prize money increases as teams advance through the knockout stages. Quarter-finalists will receive $20 million each, teams eliminated in the Round of 16 will earn $16 million, while Round of 32 participants will receive $12 million. Teams exiting in the group stage will still collect $10 million.

The revised prize fund is considerably larger than that of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the total distribution stood at $440 million, with champions Argentina receiving $42 million.

FIFA has also committed to covering several operational expenses for participating teams. These include business-class return flights for official delegations, accommodation for designated team members during the tournament, domestic transportation within the host countries, and logistical support such as official vehicles and equipment transport.

Individual football associations remain responsible for expenses including insurance coverage, additional delegation members beyond FIFA’s allocation, and incidental hotel costs.

While lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy remains the ultimate achievement in international football, the winning nation will not retain the original trophy permanently. Instead, FIFA presents champions with a specially produced gold-plated replica, while the original trophy remains in FIFA’s possession.

The distribution of prize money among players is determined by each country’s football federation. FIFA transfers the funds directly to national associations, which decide how the money is allocated according to their own policies and agreements with players.
