MUZAFFARABAD (Web Desk) – Former Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan escaped an armed attack after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his convoy near Tain Dhalkot, leaving his personal security guard dead and prompting authorities to launch a large-scale search operation.

According to official sources, the attack occurred while Tanveer Ilyas was travelling to Rawalakot on a scheduled two-day political visit accompanied by party leaders, supporters and security personnel. The convoy came under sudden gunfire when it reached the Tain Dhalkot area, creating panic among those travelling with the former prime minister.

During the attack, Muhammad Asif, the personal security guard assigned to protect Tanveer Ilyas, was critically injured after being struck by bullets. Despite immediate efforts by members of the convoy to assist him, he died at the scene before medical help could arrive.

Tanveer Ilyas remained unharmed in the incident. Following the attack, his security team immediately altered the travel plan, cancelled all political engagements in Rawalakot and escorted him back to Rawalpindi under enhanced security arrangements.

Police and other law enforcement agencies quickly reached the scene after receiving reports of the attack. Security personnel cordoned off the area, collected forensic evidence and began searching nearby forests, hills and surrounding routes to locate those responsible.

Investigators are examining several aspects of the attack, including whether it was a targeted assassination attempt or an isolated criminal act. Authorities have not yet identified the attackers or confirmed their motive.

Officials said evidence collected from the crime scene, including bullet casings and witness statements, will be sent for forensic examination. Investigators are also reviewing available surveillance footage from nearby roads and checkpoints to trace the movement of the suspects before and after the incident.

Security has been tightened across the region following the attack. Additional police personnel have been deployed at major entry and exit points, while checkpoints have been instructed to inspect suspicious vehicles moving through the area.

Party workers expressed grief over the death of Muhammad Asif, describing him as a loyal and dedicated member of the security team. They demanded the immediate arrest of those involved and called for stronger security arrangements for political leaders travelling in sensitive areas.

Political figures from different parties also condemned the attack, stating that violence against political personalities threatens democratic activity and public safety. They urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay.

Officials said the government is monitoring developments closely and has directed law enforcement agencies to submit progress reports on the investigation. Security agencies have also been instructed to reassess protective measures for political leaders visiting remote areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Authorities believe the investigation will become clearer once forensic reports, eyewitness accounts and intelligence information are fully analysed. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The body of security guard Muhammad Asif was shifted for legal formalities before being handed over to his family for burial. Funeral arrangements are expected to take place with participation from political leaders, party workers and local residents.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have appealed to the public to share any information that could help identify and arrest the attackers. Officials have assured that every effort is being made to solve the case and strengthen security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
