WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – The United States has approved a $1.96 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia aimed at significantly strengthening the kingdom’s air defence capabilities amid escalating military tensions across the Middle East.
The US State Department announced that the proposed defence package is intended to help Saudi Arabia counter current and emerging security threats while enhancing military cooperation with American and allied forces operating in the region.
According to the notification, the package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) along with associated warheads and support equipment. The precision-guided weapon system is designed to accurately engage aerial and ground targets while reducing unintended damage during combat operations.
The State Department said the proposed sale supports US foreign policy objectives by reinforcing the security of Saudi Arabia, describing the kingdom as a major non-NATO ally and an important contributor to regional stability and economic development.
Officials stated that strengthening Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities would improve its ability to protect critical infrastructure, population centres and military installations from missile and drone attacks that have become increasingly common in recent years.
The principal contractor for the deal will be US defence manufacturer BAE Systems, which will oversee production and delivery of the weapons under the proposed agreement.
American officials emphasised that the sale would also improve interoperability between Saudi armed forces, the United States military and allied regional partners by allowing greater operational coordination during joint security missions.
The State Department further clarified that the transfer of the weapons would not affect the operational readiness of the US military or reduce America’s own defence capabilities.
The approval comes as security concerns continue to grow throughout the Gulf following renewed military confrontations involving Iran, its regional allies and the United States.
Saudi Arabia has recently faced renewed threats after Yemen’s Houthi movement launched missile attacks targeting the southern Saudi city of Abha. The strikes followed an attack on Sanaa International Airport, where a flight carrying a Houthi delegation returning from Iran was reportedly diverted during heightened regional tensions.
The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of supporting actions against Yemen and warned that further military operations could target additional strategic locations inside the kingdom.
Military analysts say Saudi Arabia remains vulnerable to missile and drone attacks despite significant investments in advanced defence systems over the past decade.
The newly approved precision-guided weapons are expected to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s layered air defence network by improving the effectiveness of existing missile interception and short-range defence capabilities.
The announcement also comes during a period of heightened confrontation between the United States and Iran. Washington has increased military pressure on Tehran through expanded naval deployments and renewed military operations following the collapse of earlier ceasefire arrangements.
Growing instability in the Gulf has raised concerns over energy security, commercial shipping routes and the safety of critical oil infrastructure that supplies global markets.
Defence experts believe the latest weapons package reflects Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Gulf allies while maintaining a strong security presence in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
Although the State Department has approved the proposed sale, the agreement must still complete the required congressional review process before contracts are finalised and deliveries begin.
If approved without significant objections, the package will become one of the largest recent US defence sales to Saudi Arabia and is expected to further strengthen the long-standing military partnership between the two countries.
The announcement underscores Washington’s broader strategy of enhancing the defensive capabilities of regional partners while seeking to deter further escalation in an increasingly volatile Middle East security environment.
