LAHORE – The Punjab government has approved the purchase of one million metric tonnes of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) in a move aimed at stabilizing wheat and flour prices across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif sanctioned the plan to maintain market stability and ensure the availability of affordable flour and bread for consumers. Under the initiative, wheat will be supplied to flour mills at a rate of Rs3,300 per maund.
Provincial authorities said the decision is part of broader efforts to manage food security and control fluctuations in wheat prices.
The government also dismissed reports suggesting restrictions on wheat transportation from Sindh to other provinces through Punjab, stating that no verified complaints had been received regarding disruptions in wheat supply to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Officials noted that the process of collecting wheat stock declarations is currently underway, while comprehensive data on available reserves is still being compiled. They added that the latest wheat crop has relatively smaller grain size, making accurate stock assessments important for future planning.
The provincial administration further assured that after fulfilling Punjab’s domestic wheat requirements, it would facilitate wheat supplies to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in line with its inter-provincial obligations.
The move is expected to help maintain stable flour prices and strengthen food supply management across the province.
