DUBAI:Pakistani superstar Mahira Khan has said that a powerful story will always take precedence over the size of a role, offering insights into her approach to acting, fame and the emotional challenges of portraying complex characters.
Speaking during her appearance at the Jashn-e-Rekhta in Dubai, Mahira reflected on her career journey and explained why she prioritises meaningful storytelling over the number of scenes or the prominence of a character.
The actress revealed that when selecting a project, she focuses primarily on the overall narrative rather than the importance of the role being offered. She noted that a well-written story can elevate every character, regardless of screen time.
Mahira recalled that after returning from the United States, reading Urdu scripts initially proved challenging. However, she made it a point to carefully understand the entire story before committing to any project, a habit she has maintained throughout her career.
According to the actress, experience has taught her that an actor’s worth should not be judged by how often they appear on screen. She said maturity and years in the industry helped her realise that impactful performances are not necessarily linked to the length of a role.

The conversation also turned to her critically acclaimed film Verna, directed by Shoaib Mansoor. Mahira discussed the emotional weight of portraying a survivor seeking justice and acknowledged that certain roles can leave a lasting impact on actors long after filming has concluded.
She explained that some characters stay with performers for years, particularly when the stories involve trauma, pain and resilience. Such experiences, she said, often leave a deep emotional impression beyond the set.
Despite being one of Pakistan’s most recognised entertainment figures, Mahira said she has never viewed fame as the most important aspect of her profession. Instead, she values the relationships and connections she has built through her work.
The actress described celebrity status as temporary and stressed the importance of remaining humble. She added that her family plays a significant role in keeping her grounded, often reminding her not to take stardom too seriously.
Reflecting on the nature of fame, Mahira remarked that public recognition can be fleeting, making it essential to stay connected to reality and focus on what truly matters beyond the spotlight.
