Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats reportedly fired on at least two ships, including an Indian-flagged tanker, forcing them to reverse course while transiting the vital oil route. The vessels were carrying crude oil and were attempting to cross the strait when the incident occurred amid Iran’s renewed restrictions on maritime traffic.
The attack came as Iran tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that no unauthorized ships would be allowed to pass due to ongoing tensions linked to a US-led blockade.
The waterway handles a significant portion of global oil shipments, making the situation a serious international concern.
India reacted swiftly, summoning Iran’s ambassador in New Delhi and lodging a strong protest over the incident. Indian officials expressed “deep concern” and urged Tehran to ensure the safety of Indian vessels and crew, while demanding the immediate restoration of secure passage through the strait.
According to maritime reports, no casualties were reported, but the incident disrupted shipping routes and raised fears over energy security. The Indian government also emphasized that the safety of its seafarers remains a top priority.
The escalation highlights growing risks in the region as geopolitical tensions intensify, with global markets closely watching developments in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
