(News Desk) – Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92, according to Indian media reports.
She was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening after suffering from what her granddaughter described as “extreme exhaustion” and a chest infection. Her son later confirmed her death on Sunday afternoon.
In a statement, he said that people could pay their last respects at her residence in Lower Parel on Monday morning, while her last rites would be performed later the same day at Shivaji Park.
Bhosle, the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, carved out a legendary career of her own spanning several decades. In 2011, she entered the Guinness World Records for recording the highest number of studio singles, with over 11,000 songs in more than 20 Indian languages.
She was widely celebrated for iconic songs such as *Sapne Mein*, *Intaha Ho Gai Intezar Ki*, and *Kehdoon Tumhen*, among countless others.
Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, she began performing at the age of nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. Her father, Dinananth Mangeshkar, was a respected classical musician.
Throughout her illustrious career, Bhosle received numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She also earned Grammy nominations for her collaborative works, including albums with Ali Akbar Khan.
Despite early typecasting in cabaret-style songs, she later showcased remarkable versatility, notably performing ghazals in films such as *Umrao Jaan*. In addition to singing, she also appeared in films, including *Mai* (2013), where she portrayed an elderly woman battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Bhosle’s personal life saw its share of challenges. She married Ganpatrao Bhosle at the age of 16, though the marriage ended in separation in 1960. She later married renowned composer Rahul Dev Burman in 1980, who passed away in 1994.
