The 17th anniversary of the March 3, 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team at Liberty Chowk was observed with solemnity. Senior officers visited the graves of the martyrs, laid floral wreaths and offered Fateha. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a salute in honour of the fallen officials.

Tributes were paid to Head Constable Faisal Rasheed and Constable Tipu Fareed of the Police Guard, along with Traffic Warden Tanveer Iqbal, Head Constable Faisal Rasheed and constables Mudassar Nadeem, Zafar Iqbal, Mohammad Sultan and Tipu Fareed, who embraced martyrdom while thwarting the terrorist assault and ensuring the safe evacuation of the Sri Lankan team.

In his message, Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana said the martyrs of Liberty Chowk set an enduring example of bravery and sacrifice. He noted that 343 officers and personnel of Lahore Police had laid down their lives in the line of duty and reaffirmed that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.

Separately, on the directions of the CCPO, a ceremony was held at the Capital City Police Headquarters where DIG (Admin) Imran Kishwar distributed the latest laptops among children of police martyrs.

The beneficiaries included the children of Shaheed Sub-Inspector Muhammad Yousaf, Shaheed Head Constable Muhammad Saeed, Shaheed Head Constable Ismat Ali and Shaheed Head Constable Shabbir Ahmed. Muniba Saeed, daughter of Shaheed Head Constable Muhammad Saeed, received a laptop, while his son Muhammad Ahmed was presented with a bicycle.

Speaking on the occasion, the CCPO reiterated that the police department remained committed to the welfare of martyrs’ families and was ensuring educational scholarships and other support to facilitate uninterrupted learning. DIG Imran Kishwar said many of the students were pursuing higher education in medicine, engineering and information technology, adding that the initiative would contribute to securing a brighter future for them.
