The decision was discussed during a high-level meeting on the SMEDA business plan, where a three-year roadmap for the promotion of small and medium-sized businesses was reviewed. The roadmap focuses on addressing long-standing challenges faced by SMEs and integrating them into the export value chain.
During the meeting, it was emphasized that SMEs form the backbone of the economy and, if supported properly, can become a game changer for Pakistan’s export growth. Authorities noted that timely support and a practical policy framework could help small businesses punch above their weight in international markets.
Instructions were issued to speed up coordination with banks and financial institutions to ensure the availability of loans for SMEs on easier terms. Participants acknowledged that limited access to finance remains one of the biggest stumbling blocks for small businesses and that removing this hurdle is key to sustainable growth.
Officials also briefed the meeting on steps being taken to improve competitiveness, including policy reforms, capacity-building initiatives, and export-oriented strategies. Ongoing collaboration with various countries to introduce Pakistani SMEs to global markets was highlighted as a step in the right direction.
It was shared that multiple workshops have been organized in six cities to enhance the capacity of SMEs, while training programmes are underway to prepare businesses for global competition. Special focus is also being placed on encouraging women’s participation in the SME sector to ensure inclusive economic growth.
Senior government officials, representatives of SMEDA, and heads of key institutions attended the meeting.
