LAHORE: In Punjab Assembly, a resolution demanding the introduction of a federal parliamentary system in Punjab and the establishment of a Senate has been passed.

The resolution was prepared by PML-N’s Amjad Ali Javed, Samiullah, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Ali Haider and other members.
It states that it is the opinion of the House that according to official figures, the population of Punjab province is 124 million and Punjab is a larger province than 171 countries in terms of population.
Only eleven countries in the world have a larger population than Punjab province. In the management and consultation of a province with such a large population, representation of people and experts from every sector of society is extremely necessary. There is no room for this in the current constitutional structure of Pakistan. This House recommends to the Federal Government that a bicameral system be introduced in Punjab province through necessary amendments to the Constitution of Pakistan. An upper house (on the lines of the Senate) should be established in Punjab along with the lower house of the Punjab Assembly. Government member Amjad Ali Javed said that in order to improve the administrative affairs of the province, a high-level bicameral system consisting of technocrats should be introduced.
A Senate should be introduced in Punjab on the model of the Centre.
The resolution to introduce a bicameral system in Punjab was passed by a majority vote.
