LAHORE: December sets in and temperatures drop across the country, the World Health Organization (WHO) and health experts are advising people to take preventive measures to protect themselves from cold-related illnesses, including respiratory infections, flu, and seasonal colds.
According to WHO guidelines, common preventive measures against cold and winter illnesses include:
- Dress appropriately: Wear warm clothes, including woolen sweaters, coats, and scarves, especially during mornings and nights. Layered clothing helps maintain body heat.
- Boost immunity: Consume vitamin-rich foods such as citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, and carrots. Drinking warm soups and herbal teas can also help.
- Stay hydrated: Even in winter, dehydration can weaken the immune system. Drinking sufficient water and warm fluids is crucial.
- Avoid sudden exposure: Limit early morning and late-night exposure to cold winds, fog, and damp conditions.
- Practice hygiene: Frequent handwashing and using masks in crowded places can prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses.
- Ventilate homes wisely: While keeping homes warm, ensure proper ventilation to avoid indoor pollution that can irritate respiratory passages.
- Exercise regularly: Mild physical activity helps maintain body warmth and supports immunity.
WHO also emphasizes avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, as they are ineffective against viral infections like the common cold and flu. Individuals are urged to seek medical care if symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, or difficulty breathing occur.
With the Meteorological Department predicting further drops in temperature and cold winds across Punjab, authorities are urging people to take preventive measures seriously, particularly in northern areas and plains where early morning fog may worsen respiratory conditions.
