KASUR (Web Desk) – A tragic incident in Kasur claimed the lives of two young boys after they drowned in accumulated rainwater in Raja Jang, raising fresh concerns over inadequate drainage infrastructure and public safety following recent monsoon rains.

According to police, the incident occurred when 10-year-old Saad Ali, son of Saeed Ahmed, and 11-year-old Ehsan, son of Yaqoob Arain, accidentally entered a large pool of stagnant rainwater that had collected in the area after continuous rainfall. Both children reportedly disappeared beneath the water before nearby residents could rescue them.

Police said the incident was reported through the Rescue 15 emergency helpline by Zulfiqar, a relative of one of the victims. A police team immediately reached the site and conducted an initial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Officials confirmed that both children had died due to drowning in the accumulated rainwater. After completing legal formalities and documenting the incident, the bodies were handed over to the grieving families for burial.

The heartbreaking incident left residents of Raja Jang in shock, with many gathering near the site to express grief and anger over what they described as preventable deaths. Locals alleged that rainwater had remained stagnant in streets and open areas for several days because of poor drainage arrangements.

Residents said repeated complaints about blocked drains and waterlogging had not received an adequate response from the concerned authorities. They argued that timely drainage of rainwater could have prevented the formation of deep pools that pose serious risks, particularly to children.

Community members demanded an immediate inspection of drainage systems in Raja Jang and surrounding localities. They urged municipal authorities to clear blocked drains, improve rainwater disposal systems and identify hazardous locations where stagnant water collects after heavy rainfall.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with urban flooding and poor drainage during Pakistan’s monsoon season. Experts warn that accumulated rainwater not only creates drowning hazards but also increases the risk of waterborne diseases and mosquito breeding.

Local residents also called for protective barriers, warning signs and regular monitoring of waterlogged areas to prevent children from entering dangerous locations. They stressed that awareness campaigns should be launched to educate families about the risks posed by standing rainwater.

Police said further investigation into the incident is continuing, although preliminary findings indicate that the deaths were accidental. Authorities are expected to submit a report detailing the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The recent spell of monsoon rains has caused flooding, waterlogging and infrastructure damage in several districts across Punjab, with emergency services responding to multiple weather-related incidents. Rescue officials have repeatedly advised parents to keep children away from flooded streets, ponds and drainage channels during heavy rains.

Civic experts believe local governments should strengthen drainage infrastructure before each monsoon season to reduce flooding in residential areas. They say routine maintenance of stormwater drains and rapid water removal can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

Residents expressed hope that the loss of the two children would prompt authorities to take practical measures instead of temporary responses. They urged officials to treat drainage improvement as a public safety priority rather than a seasonal issue.

The deaths of Saad Ali and Ehsan have cast a shadow over the Raja Jang community, serving as another reminder of the human cost of inadequate urban infrastructure during the monsoon season. Families in the area have appealed to the administration to ensure that no other household experiences a similar tragedy in the future.
