LAHORE: Hafiza Saira, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Co Build Pvt Ltd, has expressed deep concerns over the issues faced by Pakistan’s IT industry.

In an exclusive interview, she explained the economic losses, operational hurdles, and potential solutions to stabilize the sector, which is vital for the country’s economic growth.

Q: How do you describe the current state of Pakistan’s IT sector?

Hafiza Saira: The IT sector in Pakistan is going through a challenging phase. Over the last year, we have witnessed a loss of around $300 million due to various factors, including internet disruptions and policy inconsistencies. Top IT giants have shut down their operations in Pakistan, and many have shifted to other countries, resulting in a significant blow to the industry. Freelancers, who contribute immensely to Pakistan’s IT exports, are also struggling due to poor infrastructure and unreliable digital payment systems.

Q: May you elaborate on how the internet infrastructure is affecting the IT industry?

Hafiza Saira: Reliable internet infrastructure is the backbone of the IT industry. Unfortunately, frequent disruptions and high costs have made it difficult for companies to operate efficiently. Freelancers, in particular, are unable to meet deadlines, leading to a loss of credibility and income. This issue needs immediate attention to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.

Q: Have companies shifted operations to other countries? If yes, why?

Hafiza Saira: Yes, so many companies have moved their ventures to countries like the UAE, Malaysia, and Singapore, where policies are more business-friendly, and infrastructure is more robust. The uncertainty in Pakistan, coupled with heavy taxation and lack of incentives, has driven many businesses to look for stable environments elsewhere.

Q: What measures would you suggest to avert the current crisis in the IT sector?

Hafiza Saira: There are three key areas that need immediate focus:

• Stabilize the Internet Infrastructure: Ensure high-speed, affordable, and reliable internet to support the operations of IT companies and freelancers.

• Tax Incentives and Streamlined Processes: The government should offer tax relief and simplify regulatory procedures to encourage foreign investment and support local companies.

• Strengthen Digital Payment Channels: Platforms like PayPal should be introduced in Pakistan to facilitate smooth and secure transactions for freelancers and IT companies.

Q: What role does Co Build Pvt Ltd play in Pakistan’s IT industry?

Hafiza Saira: Co Build Pvt Ltd is committed to fostering innovation and creating sustainable IT solutions for businesses in Pakistan and beyond. As COO, I ensure that all operations run smoothly, focusing on client satisfaction and operational excellence. Despite the challenges, we are striving to set an example of resilience and growth in these trying times.

Q: Anything you’d like to add?

Hafiza Saira: Pakistan’s IT industry has immense potential, but it requires consistent policies, infrastructure development, and government support to thrive. If these areas are addressed, we can position ourselves as a leading IT hub in the region.

Q: Any message for the government or stakeholders?

Hafiza Saira: The IT sector is the future of Pakistan’s economy. By prioritizing it and addressing its challenges, we can unlock substantial growth and employment opportunities. Collaboration between the government, private sector, and stakeholders is crucial for achieving this goal.

Q: Lastly, what keeps you motivated despite these challenges?

Hafiza Saira: Pakistan’s IT talent and innovation keep me hopeful. If given the right environment, I believe we can overcome any obstacle and emerge stronger.
