Shalimar Express coach derails near Khanewal, passengers safe as probe begins

KHANEWAL (Web Desk) – Railway operations on one of Pakistan’s busiest passenger routes were briefly disrupted after a coach of the Lahore-to-Karachi Shalimar Express derailed near Khanewal Railway Station. The incident caused a delay of nearly one hour, but railway officials confirmed that all passengers remained safe and no injuries or fatalities were reported.

According to Pakistan Railways, the derailment occurred when one coach of the 28-Down Shalimar Express came off the tracks while passing through the Khanewal section during its scheduled journey from Lahore to Karachi. The remaining coaches stayed on the track, preventing a more serious accident and allowing railway staff to respond quickly.

Passengers onboard experienced a temporary halt as railway authorities immediately secured the affected area and began emergency restoration work. Officials said passengers were informed about the situation and necessary arrangements were made to ensure their safety throughout the operation.

A relief train was dispatched from Multan shortly after the derailment was reported. The rescue and engineering teams arrived at the site with specialized equipment to remove the affected coach and restore the damaged section of the railway line. Technical experts also began inspecting nearby tracks to ensure they were safe before train operations resumed.

Pakistan Railways stated that the swift response helped minimize disruption on the busy north-south rail corridor. While several services experienced short delays, railway authorities worked to normalize operations as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson for the Multan Division confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Engineers and railway inspectors are examining the condition of the track, wheels, suspension system and other mechanical components that may have contributed to the incident.

Officials said the inquiry will also review operational records, maintenance reports and the condition of the railway infrastructure in the area. The findings are expected to help identify whether the derailment resulted from a technical fault, track conditions or another operational factor.

Railway authorities emphasized that passenger safety remained their top priority throughout the response. Emergency procedures were implemented immediately after the derailment, with railway staff guiding passengers and securing the train until engineering teams completed their initial assessment.

The Shalimar Express is among Pakistan Railways’ important long-distance passenger services, connecting Lahore and Karachi while stopping at several major cities along the route. The train carries hundreds of passengers daily and serves as a key transportation link between Punjab and Sindh.

Transportation experts note that regular inspection and preventive maintenance are essential for ensuring the safe operation of railway services, particularly on heavily used routes where trains operate throughout the day. Continuous monitoring of tracks, signaling systems and rolling stock plays a critical role in reducing operational risks.

Pakistan Railways has undertaken various infrastructure improvement projects in recent years aimed at modernizing tracks, upgrading signaling equipment and improving passenger safety standards across the national rail network. Officials say these efforts are intended to enhance reliability while reducing service interruptions.

The derailment has renewed attention on the importance of routine maintenance and timely infrastructure upgrades as passenger demand continues to grow. Industry analysts believe investments in railway modernization can improve operational efficiency while strengthening public confidence in rail transport.

Despite the incident, railway officials stressed that there was no major damage to the overall rail corridor and that restoration work was progressing according to schedule. Engineers remained on site to complete inspections before fully reopening the affected section for normal train traffic.

Passengers praised the prompt response of railway staff, who ensured orderly management during the temporary disruption and kept travelers informed throughout the operation.

Pakistan Railways said further information will be released after the preliminary investigation is completed. If necessary, additional technical inspections and safety recommendations will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Normal train services are expected to continue after the damaged coach is removed and the affected track section receives final safety clearance, allowing operations on the Lahore-Karachi route to proceed without further disruption.
