LAHORE (Web Desk) – The Punjab government has unveiled a new QR code-enabled panic button system designed to improve passenger security and strengthen emergency response services across the province’s public transport sector.
Developed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority under the Digital Punjab initiative, the project aims to connect public transport vehicles with the province’s modern safety and monitoring network.
Under the scheme, QR Panic Buttons will be installed in buses, taxis, rickshaws, vans and other public transport vehicles operating throughout Punjab. Officials said the technology was developed internally by the authority, eliminating the need for additional government spending.
Passengers will be able to access the service free of charge through the Public Safety App and the Punjab Safe Cities digital platform.
The system offers a range of safety tools, including emergency alerts, voice and video calling, live messaging, real-time location sharing, vehicle verification and direct communication with law enforcement agencies.
By scanning a QR code at the beginning of a journey, commuters can instantly access verified information about the vehicle, its registered owner and driver. The details can also be shared with family members or trusted contacts for added security.
In emergency situations, passengers can quickly reach authorities through calls, video calls or live chat. The platform automatically shares the user’s location and vehicle information with the Safe Cities control centre, enabling police and emergency services to respond more efficiently.
Officials said the feature will also be available to drivers, allowing them to seek immediate assistance whenever required.
Abdul Karim said safeguarding citizens remains a top priority and described the QR Panic Button as an important step towards improving coordination between the public and law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, Ahsan Younas said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to create a smarter and safer transport environment through the use of digital technologies, surveillance systems and real-time emergency response capabilities.
