ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association has withdrawn its planned nationwide strike after reaching an agreement with the federal government during negotiations held in Islamabad, ending concerns over a possible disruption in fuel supplies across the country.
The decision followed successful talks between representatives of the association and Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. The negotiations resulted in an understanding that addressed key concerns raised by petroleum dealers regarding the government’s proposed fuel pricing mechanism.
The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association also endorsed the decision, confirming its support during a joint press conference with the petroleum minister. The announcement brought relief to millions of motorists and businesses that had feared a nationwide fuel shortage.
Earlier, the association had announced that petrol pumps would remain closed for 24 hours, from 6am on Thursday until 6am on Friday, as a protest against the government’s proposal to revise petroleum product prices on a daily basis instead of the existing fortnightly mechanism.
The strike call had sparked concern among transport operators, commercial businesses and ordinary consumers, with many fearing long queues at fuel stations and disruptions to transport services if filling stations suspended operations.
However, after detailed discussions between government officials and representatives of petroleum dealers, both sides agreed to continue dialogue, leading to the immediate withdrawal of the strike announcement.
Petrol pumps across Pakistan will now continue normal operations without interruption, ensuring the availability of petrol and diesel for consumers.
Speaking after the meeting, officials expressed satisfaction that the negotiations had helped avoid a crisis that could have affected transportation, trade and economic activity throughout the country.
Although authorities did not immediately disclose the full details of the agreement, officials confirmed that the concerns of petroleum dealers would be discussed further through consultation before implementing any major changes to the fuel pricing system.
Petroleum dealers had argued that daily price revisions could create operational difficulties, increase financial risks and complicate inventory management at filling stations. They maintained that sudden fluctuations in international oil prices could expose retailers to financial losses if pricing changed every day.
Government representatives assured the dealers that their concerns would be taken into consideration before finalising any future policy regarding petroleum pricing.
Industry experts say uninterrupted fuel supplies are essential for maintaining economic stability, particularly at a time when transportation costs continue to influence inflation and the prices of essential goods.
The withdrawal of the strike has also eased concerns among logistics companies, public transport operators and manufacturers who rely on a continuous supply of petroleum products for daily operations.
Consumers had started visiting petrol stations in larger numbers after news of the planned strike spread, fearing shortages similar to those witnessed during previous supply disruptions. The cancellation of the protest has now restored confidence that fuel will remain available without restrictions.
Officials from the Petroleum Division welcomed the outcome of the negotiations, saying continued dialogue between the government and industry stakeholders remains the best way to resolve policy differences without affecting the public.
The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring stable fuel supplies while pursuing reforms aimed at improving the petroleum sector’s efficiency and transparency.
Meanwhile, petroleum dealers have assured customers that all filling stations affiliated with their associations will continue operating normally across the country.
Further discussions between the government and petroleum industry representatives are expected in the coming days to address outstanding issues related to petroleum pricing, taxation and supply management.
