LAHORE: Sugar prices have soared to unprecedented levels in multiple cities, with fresh figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) revealing wide differences in rates nationwide.

The latest report shows that Quetta has witnessed the sharpest rise, where sugar prices climbed by Rs19 per kg over the past week — jumping from Rs210 to Rs229 per kg. This makes Quetta the costliest city for consumers purchasing sugar.

In other major urban centres, the highest reported prices stand at Rs200 per kg in Peshawar, Rs195 per kg in Karachi and Islamabad, and Rs190 per kg in Rawalpindi, adding further pressure on household budgets.

Interestingly, while top prices surged in many cities, the countrywide average price dipped slightly by Rs2.01, reaching Rs185.47 per kg. The previous week’s average was Rs187.48 per kg.

PBS data also highlights a stark year-on-year comparison: sugar, which averaged Rs132.24 per kg twelve months ago, has become significantly more expensive, reflecting a dramatic jump in prices over the past year.
