DEHLI (Web Desk) – The success of Karuppu at the box office has now been overshadowed by an unexpected controversy involving legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. After facing criticism over a scene that appeared to reference the composer’s ongoing copyright battles, the makers of the film have issued a public apology and confirmed that the sequence will be edited or removed from future screenings.
The issue erupted after audiences pointed out a humorous scene featuring the iconic track Poradada from the 1985 film Alai Osai. Soon after the song plays, a dialogue in the film seemingly alludes to Ilaiyaraaja’s well-known stance on copyright protection and his legal notices regarding the unauthorised use of his music. While the scene was intended as satire, many viewers — particularly fans of the composer — felt it mocked his long-standing efforts to safeguard artists’ rights and creative ownership.
As criticism spread across social media, the production banner Dream Warrior Pictures responded with an official statement clarifying its position. The makers insisted that there was no intention to insult or target Ilaiyaraaja personally. According to the statement, the dialogue was included purely within a broader comedic context and was not designed as a direct remark against the veteran musician.
The production house also paid tribute to Ilaiyaraaja’s immense contribution to Indian cinema, describing him as a musical legend whose influence has shaped generations for over five decades. Acknowledging the emotional reaction surrounding the scene, the team expressed regret that the dialogue had caused discomfort to the composer and his supporters.
In a conciliatory move, the producers announced that the disputed portion would either be altered or completely removed in upcoming theatrical screenings and future versions of the film. The statement underlined the team’s respect for Ilaiyaraaja and reaffirmed that they never intended to undermine his artistic legacy or legal rights.
The controversy surfaced shortly after Karuppu faced another hurdle ahead of release. The film, starring Suriya alongside Trisha Krishnan, Sshivada, Indrans and Natty Subramaniam, was originally slated to arrive in theatres on May 14. However, several early morning shows were abruptly cancelled due to financial and production complications. Producer SR Prabhu later clarified that the disruption stemmed from unavoidable circumstances, and the issues were resolved within a day, allowing the film to finally release on May 15.
