KARACHI (Web Desk) – Karachi Port has achieved another milestone in Pakistan’s maritime sector with the arrival of MSC Loreto, one of the world’s largest container vessels. The successful berthing of the ultra-large ship reflects the port’s growing ability to accommodate some of the biggest vessels operating on international trade routes and signals continued progress in the country’s shipping infrastructure.
According to officials at Karachi Port Trust (KPT), MSC Loreto docked safely at South Wharf Berth No. 2 of the South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPTL). The vessel measures approximately 399.9 meters in length and has a maximum carrying capacity of 24,346 containers, placing it among the largest container ships currently in service worldwide.
The ship arrived at Karachi carrying 14,538 containers. During its scheduled stay at the terminal, around 3,802 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) will be unloaded before the vessel resumes its voyage. Port authorities said the cargo handling process is being carried out through modern equipment and advanced terminal operations to ensure timely completion.
A spokesperson for Karachi Port Trust described the vessel’s arrival as an important achievement for Pakistan’s maritime industry. The official said the successful handling of a ship of this size demonstrates that Karachi Port has significantly strengthened its operational capabilities and can now efficiently manage some of the largest container vessels in the global shipping fleet.
Officials noted that improvements made in recent years, including upgraded berths, modern cargo-handling equipment, deeper navigation channels, and enhanced terminal facilities, have enabled the port to receive increasingly larger vessels. These developments are expected to improve cargo movement, reduce shipping delays, and support growing international trade.
Industry experts believe the arrival of ultra-large container ships at Karachi Port will enhance Pakistan’s reputation among global shipping companies. Ports capable of accommodating larger vessels often become more attractive to international shipping lines because they can handle greater cargo volumes in fewer voyages, resulting in improved operational efficiency and lower transportation costs.

Karachi Port remains Pakistan’s principal maritime gateway, handling a substantial share of the country’s international trade. Port authorities said the smooth arrival and berthing of MSC Loreto was made possible through careful planning and coordination between marine pilots, terminal operators, tug services, and other operational teams. They added that maintaining high safety standards remains a priority during cargo operations involving vessels of this scale.
MSC Loreto is expected to remain at Karachi Port for two days before departing for the United Arab Emirates to continue its scheduled international voyage. During its stay, cargo operations will continue around the clock to ensure efficient unloading and timely departure.
Maritime analysts say the successful handling of the vessel highlights Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its port infrastructure and strengthen its position within regional and global shipping networks.
