MEXICO (The Tribune International) Iran’s national football team has received visas to enter the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a US official, easing uncertainty surrounding the squad’s participation in the tournament.
The development comes just days before Iran begin their World Cup campaign, with players now cleared to travel for their scheduled matches in the United States.
However, reports from Iranian media indicate that several members of the team’s administrative delegation have yet to obtain entry visas. Those reportedly still awaiting approval include senior football federation officials and media representatives travelling with the squad.
According to the reports, the affected staff members will accompany the team to Mexico while efforts continue to secure the necessary travel documents before the start of the tournament.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by United States, Mexico and Canada, is set to begin this week and will feature teams from across the globe.
Iran’s preparations have attracted particular attention because of ongoing political tensions between Tehran and Washington. The visa process became a significant talking point in recent weeks, prompting concerns about travel arrangements for players and officials.
Reports suggest Iranian authorities opted to establish the team’s tournament base in the Mexican city of Tijuana rather than in the United States. The decision was reportedly influenced by logistical considerations and the uncertainty surrounding visa approvals.
Iran are expected to arrive in Mexico before travelling to the United States for their group-stage fixtures. Their World Cup journey will begin against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. The team is also scheduled to face Belgium and Egypt during the group stage.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would not be permitted to enter the country as part of the Iranian delegation.
Despite the diplomatic challenges, Iranian officials have stressed their commitment to participating in the tournament and completing all necessary arrangements ahead of the opening match.
With the players now cleared to travel, attention is expected to shift back to football as Iran prepares for another appearance on the sport’s biggest stage.
