CALIFORNIA (Web Desk) – Google has unveiled a new account recovery feature that allows users to regain access to their accounts by verifying their identity through a selfie video, marking another step in the company’s efforts to strengthen account security while making password recovery easier.

The new feature is designed for users who forget their passwords or lose access to their accounts. Instead of relying solely on traditional recovery methods, users will be able to verify their identity by recording a short video of themselves.

According to Google, the setup process requires users to record an initial selfie video while looking directly into the camera and following simple on-screen instructions. During the recording, users will be asked to move their faces from different angles so the system can accurately capture facial details for future verification.

If a user later forgets their password, Google will prompt them to record another selfie video using the same verification process.

The company’s authentication system will compare the new recording with the previously stored video to determine whether both recordings belong to the same individual. Once the identity is successfully verified, the user will be allowed to regain access to the account.

Google says the feature is intended to provide a convenient alternative to traditional recovery methods, especially in situations where users no longer have access to recovery emails, phone numbers or backup authentication options.

Company officials emphasized that user privacy remains a key part of the new system.

The stored selfie videos will be encrypted using advanced security technology, ensuring they remain protected from unauthorized access.

Google also stated that the recorded videos will only be used for account verification purposes unless users specifically grant permission for another use.

Users will retain full control over their stored biometric information and can permanently delete their saved selfie videos from their Google accounts whenever they choose.

To reduce the risk of fraud, the company has incorporated advanced detection technology capable of identifying manipulated images, deepfake videos and other forms of identity spoofing.

These additional safeguards are designed to ensure that only genuine users can successfully complete the verification process.

Cybersecurity experts say biometric authentication methods such as facial recognition are becoming increasingly common as technology companies seek alternatives to passwords, which remain vulnerable to hacking, phishing attacks and credential theft.

Modern authentication systems increasingly combine passwords with biometric verification, security keys and multi-factor authentication to provide stronger protection for online accounts.

Google has continued expanding its security ecosystem in recent years by promoting passkeys, two-step verification and device-based authentication to reduce dependence on traditional passwords.

The introduction of selfie video verification represents another option for users seeking secure and convenient ways to recover access to their accounts without lengthy identity verification procedures.

Industry analysts believe the feature could prove particularly useful for users who frequently forget passwords or lose access to recovery devices.

However, privacy advocates continue to encourage users to carefully review how biometric data is stored and managed before enabling facial verification features.

Google maintains that users remain in control of their personal information and can disable or remove the stored selfie verification data at any time through their account settings.

The company has not yet announced whether the feature will be available immediately to all Google account holders or introduced gradually across different regions and devices.

The rollout reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to improve both account security and user convenience as digital identity protection becomes increasingly important in today’s online environment.
