LAHORE/GENEVA: The Digital Platform Workers Union (DPWU) has welcomed the historic adoption of ILO Convention 193 at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, describing it as a major breakthrough for gig economy and digital platform workers worldwide.

The convention is the first international treaty specifically aimed at safeguarding the rights of platform workers, including ride-hailing drivers, delivery riders, freelancers, and other workers engaged through digital platforms.

Reacting to the development, DPWU President Zafar Malik termed the adoption of Convention 193 a landmark achievement for millions of workers who have long remained outside the protection of traditional labour laws.

“The adoption of Convention 193 is a monumental victory for millions of platform workers who have long remained invisible in the eyes of the law,” Malik said.

He noted that the convention formally recognizes that riders, delivery workers, freelancers and other platform-based workers are entitled to the same fundamental labour rights enjoyed by employees in traditional sectors.

Malik urged the Government of Pakistan to ratify the convention without delay and introduce the necessary amendments to domestic labour laws to ensure comprehensive protection for platform workers.

He emphasized the need for social security coverage, occupational health and safety measures, fair wages, and transparent algorithmic management systems used by digital platforms.

“Our struggle will continue until every worker is treated with dignity, provided legal protection, and granted equal rights in the workplace,” he added.

The DPWU said the adoption of the convention marks a significant step toward improving working conditions and ensuring greater social and economic security for workers in the rapidly expanding digital economy.
