Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s announcement to reward staff with one month’s salary for their efforts in maintaining cleanliness during the Eid celebration is commendable gesture.

The recognition of the staff’s hard work and dedication is a morale booster and sets a positive precedent.
However, the real challenge lies in the sustaining this momentum and making cleanliness a daily priority with out area distinction through a permanent system.
While the special cleanliness drive was a success, the focus should be now shift to establishing a robust waste management system that functions effectively on a daily basis.
This requires a permanent infrastructure, regular resources and a committed team. The CM’s appreciation and reward will surely motivate the staff but it is essential to institutionalise the process to ensure consistency.
The involvement of municipal institutions, waste management companies, LWMC and elected representatives is crucial in maintaining a clean environment.
The media and public support are also vital in keeping the pressure on the pressures on the authorities to prioritise cleanliness.
CM Maryam’s initiative is a step in right direction, but the real test lies in the sustaining this effort and making cleanliness a daily habit. By establishing a permanent system and encouraging staff through incentives like the one salary announced, Punjab can set an example to follow. Only then can we hope to see a significant improvement in the state of cleanliness in our cities and town.[:]
