KATHMANDU (Web Desk) – A German climber has died after falling approximately 1,500 metres while descending from the summit of Ama Dablam in northeastern Nepal, a local trekking company official said Monday.
The climber reached the 6,814-metre summit on Sunday but fell during his descent and died on Monday, according to Gokul Thapa, head of Real Himalaya Pvt Ltd, which provided local logistical support.
Thapa told Reuters that a search team recovered the climber’s body on Monday from the mountain. The remains were due to be transported by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu for a post-mortem examination.
Ama Dablam, located in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district, is a popular destination for mountaineers and lies in the Everest region, which attracts climbers from around the world.
The incident comes amid a busy autumn climbing season in Nepal. More than 300 mountaineers have received permits to climb Ama Dablam during the September-November season.
Last week, two Japanese climbers also died while attempting to climb another mountain in western Nepal, highlighting the risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering.
Climbers attempting Himalayan peaks face potential hazards during both ascent and descent, including steep terrain, changing weather conditions and difficult routes.
Authorities and local support teams are expected to complete the necessary procedures following the recovery of the German climber’s body.
