NEW YORK (Web Desk) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and members of Iran’s negotiating team are expected to meet Qatari mediators in New York on Monday to discuss the latest proposals and developments in talks with the United States, Iranian media reported.

According to Iranian state-linked reports, the meeting is expected to focus on the latest views and proposals concerning the conflict between Tehran and Washington. No US representative is expected to attend the meeting, with Qatar continuing to serve as an intermediary between the two sides.

The planned discussions come as diplomatic efforts intensify on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Araghchi is in the US for the UN gathering, where Iran has sought to communicate its position on ending the conflict and restarting negotiations.

Qatar has played a key role in facilitating communication between Iran and the United States during the conflict. Earlier this month, Doha was also involved in efforts to convey Iranian proposals to Washington concerning the war and the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait has emerged as one of the central issues in the diplomatic discussions. Iran has linked the reopening of the strategic waterway to conditions involving the cessation of hostilities and the lifting of restrictions imposed during the conflict.

The latest meeting follows earlier mediated contacts between Iranian and US officials in New York. On Sept. 22, Iranian and US representatives communicated through mediators on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, marking the first known high-level contact between the two countries since an interim ceasefire collapsed in July.

US President Donald Trump said US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had held a lengthy meeting with mediators representing Iran. Iranian officials, however, stressed that their delegation was not authorised to hold direct face-to-face negotiations with the Americans at that stage.

Iran has continued to communicate its conditions through intermediaries. Iranian officials have previously said Tehran wants an end to military hostilities and changes to restrictions affecting Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz as part of any broader diplomatic arrangement.

In New York, Araghchi has also been involved in wider diplomatic contacts aimed at explaining Iran’s position to regional and international officials. Before travelling to the United States for the UN General Assembly, he stopped in Doha for consultations with Qatari officials on regional developments.

Qatar’s involvement reflects its broader role in regional diplomacy. The country has sought to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran while also engaging with other regional governments over security and freedom of navigation.

The planned Araghchi-Qatari meeting comes days after Iran presented what it described as a roadmap for ending the conflict. The proposal reportedly included steps related to a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, although the two sides remain divided over the conditions for restarting formal negotiations.

The diplomatic activity at the UN comes against the backdrop of continued military and political tensions between Iran and the United States. While mediated contacts have resumed, neither side has publicly announced a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict.

For Qatar, the immediate focus remains on maintaining channels of communication between Tehran and Washington. For Iran, the meetings provide an opportunity to convey its latest position through an intermediary without necessarily entering direct negotiations with US officials.

The outcome of the discussions could determine whether further diplomatic contacts take place in the coming days. However, the positions of Tehran and Washington on the conditions for ending the conflict remain significantly different.
