(Web Desk) – The Sindh government has announced a major expansion of its public transport network, confirming the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in September alongside the induction of hundreds of new electric buses and additional double-decker buses aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing environmental pollution.
The decisions were taken during a high-level meeting on transport and mass transit chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, who reviewed the progress of ongoing transport infrastructure projects and future expansion plans across the province.
According to officials, the EV taxi service will begin operations in September as part of the provincial government’s strategy to modernize urban transport while promoting environmentally friendly travel options.
Authorities said the project is expected to provide commuters with cleaner, safer and more affordable transportation while encouraging the gradual transition from fuel-powered vehicles to electric mobility.
The meeting also approved a plan to induct 1,000 electric buses into Sindh’s public transport system in phases before the end of the year.

Officials believe the addition of electric buses will significantly strengthen public transportation capacity in Karachi and other urban centres while helping reduce carbon emissions.
Sharjeel Memon said the provincial government remains committed to introducing modern transport facilities that meet international environmental and safety standards.
He added that electric vehicles represent an important step toward creating a sustainable transport system capable of serving the province’s growing population.
The meeting further confirmed that 50 additional double-decker buses will arrive in Karachi in October.
The buses are expected to operate on major city routes to improve passenger capacity and offer commuters a more comfortable travel experience.
Officials noted that the existing double-decker bus service has attracted considerable public interest since its introduction and the additional fleet will help meet increasing demand.
The provincial government also reviewed progress on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
Sharjeel Memon directed relevant departments to complete construction of all Red Line depots within the approved schedule to avoid further delays in the project’s implementation.
Officials briefed the meeting on work being carried out along the Red Line corridor, including infrastructure development and depot construction.
The meeting decided that one section of the mixed-traffic corridor on University Road will be opened in September.
Authorities expect the opening of the section to improve traffic movement and reduce congestion on one of Karachi’s busiest roads while construction work continues on other portions of the project.
In addition to Karachi, the government also approved the expansion of the Peoples Bus Service into new districts.
New bus routes connecting Larkana with Qambar and Qambar with Shahdadkot will be introduced to improve regional connectivity and provide residents with reliable public transport.
Transport officials said expanding services beyond major urban centres remains one of the government’s priorities to ensure better mobility across Sindh.
The provincial administration believes improved transport infrastructure will support economic activity by making travel more efficient for workers, students and businesses.
Experts say the increasing adoption of electric public transport can also reduce fuel consumption, lower operating costs over the long term and improve urban air quality.
Officials added that charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities are being developed alongside the induction of electric buses to ensure uninterrupted operations.
The government said further transport reforms will continue as additional projects move toward completion.
Authorities also emphasized that improving public transport is essential for reducing traffic congestion, encouraging the use of mass transit and providing affordable travel options for citizens.
