Apple eyes all-screen iPhone with 200MP camera in 2028 overhaul

Apple is reportedly developing a redesigned 2028 iPhone featuring an all-screen display, under-display Face ID, A22 Pro chip and advanced 200MP telephoto camera.

CUPERTINO (Web Desk) – Apple is reportedly advancing plans for a major redesign of its iPhone lineup, with early reports suggesting the company’s 2028 flagship model could introduce an uninterrupted all-screen display, under-display Face ID technology, a next-generation processor and a powerful 200-megapixel telephoto camera, marking one of the most significant upgrades in the product’s history.

The reported device is expected to build upon the technology planned for Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone, which is widely anticipated to debut in 2027 with a four-edge curved display and an almost bezel-free appearance. Industry insiders believe the 2028 model will refine those innovations while overcoming technical challenges associated with first-generation hardware.

According to reports, Apple is working to improve display quality by replacing the magnesium-silver alloy used in the anniversary model with indium zinc oxide (IZO) cathodes. The material is expected to deliver better transparency, reduce distortion around the curved edges and improve brightness consistency across the display.

Engineers are also said to be focusing on reducing heat generated by the display while making the bezels even thinner. These improvements could enhance viewing quality and make the screen appear more seamless than current iPhone models.

Reports further suggest Apple may continue expanding the use of tandem OLED display technology, which stacks two light-emitting layers instead of one. The technology offers higher brightness, improved power efficiency and a longer display lifespan. Apple has already introduced tandem OLED panels in its latest iPad Pro devices, making the transition to future iPhones increasingly likely.

One of the most anticipated developments involves Apple’s long-term ambition to create a true all-screen smartphone by hiding all front-facing components beneath the display. Analysts believe the company remains committed to removing visible screen cutouts entirely.

Industry analyst Ross Young has indicated that under-display Face ID technology may not be ready for Apple’s 2027 anniversary model. However, many reports suggest the 2028 iPhone could become the first Apple smartphone to successfully place Face ID sensors beneath the display.

If under-display technology requires additional refinement, Apple may instead introduce a significantly smaller punch-hole design, further reducing the visual impact of the front camera compared with the current Dynamic Island.

Performance is also expected to receive a substantial boost. Reports indicate the premium 2028 iPhone models may debut Apple’s A22 Pro processor, manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s advanced 1.4-nanometre fabrication process.

According to industry forecasts, the new chip could provide performance improvements of up to 15 percent compared with processors manufactured using 2-nanometre technology. Alternatively, it could maintain similar performance levels while reducing power consumption by approximately 30 percent, resulting in better battery life and improved thermal efficiency.

TSMC is expected to remain Apple’s primary manufacturing partner for future processors. However, some reports suggest Intel may also participate in producing selected chip components as Apple continues diversifying its semiconductor supply chain.

Camera technology is another area expected to receive major attention. Reports claim Apple is testing a new 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera capable of delivering significantly sharper zoom photography and greater image detail than previous generations.

The larger image sensor would allow users to crop photographs more aggressively without sacrificing quality while improving long-range zoom performance. High-resolution images could also benefit professional content creators and mobile photographers seeking greater editing flexibility.

The reported camera upgrade follows growing competition among smartphone manufacturers, many of whom have already introduced high-megapixel camera systems in flagship devices. Apple appears focused on combining improved hardware with advanced computational photography rather than relying solely on higher sensor resolution.

Despite growing speculation, industry observers caution that the 2028 iPhone remains several years away from commercial release. Apple frequently tests multiple hardware concepts before finalising product designs, meaning some reported features may change or be delayed before mass production begins.

Nevertheless, analysts believe the reported developments reflect Apple’s broader long-term strategy of gradually transforming the iPhone into a device with an uninterrupted display, more powerful processing capabilities and professional-grade imaging technology.

If current reports prove accurate, the 2028 iPhone could represent one of Apple’s most ambitious smartphone upgrades, refining innovations introduced in the anniversary model while bringing the company closer to its vision of a truly edge-to-edge smartphone experience.
