Trump holds separate calls with Putin, Zelensky as Crimea strike raises tensions

WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – U.S. President Donald Trump held separate telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war continued alongside renewed fighting, including a deadly strike in Russian-occupied Crimea.

The latest military escalation came after authorities installed by Russia in Crimea reported that one person was killed and two others were injured in an overnight Ukrainian attack on the peninsula. Local officials said one of the injured remained in critical condition, although they did not disclose further operational details about the strike.

Crimea has become a major flashpoint in the conflict as Ukraine intensifies long-range attacks against Russian military infrastructure across the peninsula. Kyiv considers Crimea an integral part of its sovereign territory despite Russia’s annexation of the region in 2014, a move widely rejected by the international community.

Military analysts believe Ukraine’s strategy aims to weaken Russian logistics and supply routes supporting operations in southern Ukraine. Recent strikes on military facilities, bridges and transport infrastructure have demonstrated Kyiv’s growing ability to target strategic locations deep behind Russian-controlled territory.

Against this backdrop, President Trump held separate discussions with both leaders in an effort to encourage progress toward a negotiated settlement. The conversations reflected continued U.S. engagement despite the absence of any breakthrough in ending the conflict, now entering its fifth year.

President Zelensky said he congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of American independence before discussing developments on the battlefield and prospects for peace. According to Zelensky, both leaders agreed that continued dialogue would remain important as diplomatic efforts move forward.

The Ukrainian president also expressed hope that stronger international support could help create conditions for ending the war, stressing that sustained engagement from the United States remains critical to future negotiations.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin described Trump’s conversation with President Putin as constructive. Russian officials said the discussion covered the military situation, diplomatic initiatives and possible steps toward resolving the conflict through negotiations.

According to Kremlin officials, Putin reiterated Russia’s willingness to pursue a diplomatic solution while insisting that Moscow’s core security and territorial demands must be addressed before any comprehensive agreement can be reached.

Russian officials also claimed their forces continue advancing along the front lines in eastern Ukraine. Moscow asserted that Russian troops had captured the strategically important town of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region, describing the development as another step toward securing the entire province.

Ukraine immediately rejected the claim, with its General Staff stating that Kostyantynivka remains under Ukrainian control. Ukrainian officials accused Russia of spreading misinformation regarding battlefield developments and maintained that fighting around the area continues.

The conflicting claims once again highlighted the difficulty of independently verifying military developments during the war, where both sides frequently release competing accounts of territorial gains and operational successes.

Although diplomatic contacts have increased in recent weeks, both Moscow and Kyiv continue to maintain significantly different positions regarding the conditions necessary for a ceasefire. Russia insists that any settlement must recognize what it describes as current realities on the ground, while Ukraine maintains that its territorial integrity remains non-negotiable.

The continued exchanges between Trump, Putin and Zelensky suggest diplomatic communication channels remain active despite ongoing military operations. However, analysts say meaningful progress toward a comprehensive peace agreement will likely require significant compromises that neither side has so far indicated it is prepared to make.

As fighting continues across multiple regions, international observers remain concerned that further military escalation could complicate diplomatic efforts and prolong one of Europe’s most significant security crises in decades. Both sides continue to strengthen their military positions while simultaneously expressing support for negotiations under sharply different terms.

For now, renewed attacks in Crimea and continued fighting in eastern Ukraine underscore that military operations remain active even as diplomatic discussions continue at the highest political level.
