SAN BRUNO (Tech Desk) – YouTube has rolled out a major update for Shorts, introducing several new features designed to improve the viewing experience and give users greater control over the short-form video platform. The latest changes focus on personalization, easier navigation and a cleaner interface as competition in the short-video market continues to intensify.

The update introduces a range of improvements aimed at making Shorts more engaging while reducing distractions during video playback. According to YouTube, the new features are part of its ongoing effort to enhance user experience and provide viewers with better tools to discover content that matches their interests.

One of the most noticeable additions is a new clear screen mode. The feature removes on-screen buttons, captions and interface elements while a video is playing, allowing users to watch content without visual interruptions. The simplified display creates a more immersive viewing experience, particularly for videos that rely heavily on visuals.

Another significant feature is the introduction of playback speed controls for Shorts. Users can now increase playback speed up to two times, enabling them to watch videos more quickly without leaving the Shorts interface. The feature mirrors playback options already available on regular YouTube videos and gives viewers more flexibility over how they consume content.

The platform has also redesigned the interaction buttons displayed beneath Shorts videos. The familiar thumbs-up icon is being replaced with a heart symbol, which will become the primary way for users to express appreciation for videos. The redesign aligns Shorts with trends seen across other social media platforms where heart icons have become the standard method of engagement.

In another important change, YouTube is replacing the traditional dislike button with two new feedback options: “Not Interested” and “Don’t Recommend This Channel.” Instead of simply disliking a video, viewers can now directly tell YouTube that they no longer wish to see similar content or future uploads from a specific creator.

The company believes these preference-based controls will improve recommendation accuracy by providing more meaningful feedback to its content recommendation system. Rather than interpreting dislikes alone, the platform can better understand why users choose to avoid certain content.

YouTube said the previous dislike feature was often used inconsistently or for reasons unrelated to content quality, making it less effective as a recommendation signal. The new options are expected to help personalize each user’s Shorts feed more accurately while reducing unwanted content.

Industry analysts view the update as another step in YouTube’s strategy to strengthen Shorts as competition with TikTok, Instagram Reels and other short-video platforms continues to grow. Since launching Shorts five years ago, YouTube has steadily expanded features for both viewers and creators in an effort to increase engagement.

The latest improvements also benefit content creators by helping videos reach audiences that are genuinely interested in their content. Better recommendation signals may improve viewer satisfaction while allowing creators to build stronger connections with relevant audiences.

Technology experts believe personalization has become one of the most important aspects of modern social media platforms. As billions of videos compete for attention, recommendation systems play a central role in determining what users watch and how long they remain on a platform.

YouTube has indicated that the new features will be introduced gradually to users worldwide through app updates across Android and iOS devices. Additional improvements for Shorts are expected as the company continues investing in creator tools, artificial intelligence-powered recommendations and interactive viewing experiences.

The update reflects YouTube’s broader strategy of evolving Shorts into a more competitive and user-friendly platform by combining improved personalization, cleaner design and greater viewing flexibility. With enhanced playback controls, distraction-free viewing and smarter recommendation options, YouTube aims to deliver a more engaging experience while strengthening its position in the rapidly growing short-form video market.
