Iran to reopen Strait of Hormuz under proposed US peace agreement

Iran is set to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a proposed US-backed peace deal that includes oil sales relief, reconstruction aid, and nuclear talks.

DUBAI (Web Desk) – Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately after signing a preliminary agreement with the United States aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, according to leaked copies of the accord reported by international media.

The agreement, which is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, outlines a framework for ending hostilities and beginning negotiations on a broader settlement concerning Iran’s nuclear programme. Under the proposed terms, the United States would support efforts to secure at least $300 billion for Iran’s post-war reconstruction and work toward lifting American and United Nations sanctions if a final nuclear agreement is reached.

One of the most significant provisions of the deal is Washington’s commitment to allow Iran to resume unrestricted oil exports immediately. Analysts view this as a major concession, as sanctions on Iranian oil have long been a key source of leverage for the United States.

The accord also calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route through which a large share of the world’s oil and natural gas shipments pass. The waterway’s disruption during the conflict contributed to soaring energy prices and supply concerns worldwide. Under the agreement, maritime traffic is expected to return to normal levels within 30 days, while efforts continue to clear any remaining naval mines.

Another key element of the proposal is an immediate halt to fighting in Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. However, questions remain regarding Israel’s military presence in parts of Lebanon, an issue that is not fully addressed in the leaked documents.

The agreement establishes a 60-day negotiation period, which could be extended, to work toward a comprehensive deal designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran has reiterated that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes and has once again pledged not to pursue atomic weapons.

The draft deal also includes provisions for the eventual release of frozen Iranian assets and the gradual removal of sanctions, though the timeline and conditions would be determined during future talks.

While supporters argue the agreement could ease regional tensions and stabilize global markets, critics are expected to question the scale of concessions offered to Tehran before a final nuclear settlement is reached. The proposed framework is also seen as a political challenge for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose government has maintained a hard-line stance toward Iran throughout the conflict.

The White House and Iranian authorities have yet to officially release the agreement’s full text.
