LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has decided to challenge the Punjab Local Government Bill 2025 in court.

According to PTI MpA Ijaz Shafi, we are challenging the Punjab Local Government Bill 2025 in the High Court on Monday. A representation will be submitted by Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood, Ijaz Shafi, Munir Ahmed, Mian Shabbir Ismail to challenge the Punjab Local Government Bill 2025.
Several provisions of the Local Government Act are in conflict with Articles 17, 32 and 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan, detailed objections prepared by legal experts have been sent to the government, there are serious reservations on the non-partisan, one vote multi-member union council model, the non-partisan model weakens the role of political parties, control of administrative officers instead of local representatives, will affect the powers, transfer of financial powers to centralization, will affect local autonomy, for an indefinite period.
The power to appoint administrators is unconstitutional, direct election of union council chairman should be restored, a five-year term and a clear schedule should be made mandatory for the local government system, executive intervention and strict restrictions on the powers of the administrator have been demanded.
A petition for a declaration and injunction will be filed in the Lahore High Court on Monday, demanding the implementation of the controversial provisions to be stopped and protection of local government democracy.
