LAHORE – The opposition in the Punjab Assembly has demanded the formation of a high-level parliamentary committee to probe the causes of recent flood disasters, criticizing the government for its inadequate response to the plight of victims.

Speaking on the assembly floor, Deputy Opposition Leader Moin Qureshi said that flood disasters are not among the government’s priorities. He noted that millions have been displaced, yet both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab remained engaged in foreign tours. He further pointed out that, according to the chairman of RUDA, a federal minister’s colony in Lahore was constructed illegally without an NOC. Qureshi demanded the immediate formation of a high-level committee to investigate the issue, warning that otherwise the matter would be referred to the judiciary.
Opposition MPA Rana Shahbaz said that southern Punjab is experiencing severe devastation, with areas including Garh Maharaja, Jhang, and Multan facing dangerous situations. He alleged that the government was “looting in the name of flood victims” while ignoring the crisis.
Responding to the criticism, Provincial Minister Kazim Pirzada acknowledged the heavy losses suffered by farmers due to floods but insisted that the government has taken adequate measures to address the situation.
