LAHORE: November 06 — The Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) has expressed deep concern over the demolition of nearly 150 shops at the Bhaati Gate Birds Market, describing the act as extremely harsh, one-sided, and taken without any consultation with either the LCCI or the affected traders.

In a statement here on Thursday, LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol, Senior Vice President Tanveer Ahmed Sheikh, and Vice President Khurram Lodhi strongly condemned the move, calling it a financial murder of small traders who were already struggling due to challenging economic conditions and rising operational costs.

They said the Birds Market has been a well-established and historic commercial center in Lahore for many years, directly and indirectly supporting the livelihood of around 1500 families. However, by demolishing the shops without a proper relocation or compensation plan, the authorities have brought hundreds of families to the verge of economic collapse.

The LCCI leadership further clarified that discussions and negotiations regarding the site were already underway with the relevant authorities and hopes were high for a mutually agreed upon solution.

Despite this, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) carried out the operation abruptly and unilaterally, bypassing all channels of dialogue and ignoring the ongoing consultation process.
They said that such unilateral actions not only undermine the trust of the business community but also damage the prevailing commercial ecosystem and disrupt business activity at a time when Pakistan’s economy urgently requires stability and growth.
The office-bearers urged the Punjab government to urgently take notice of the situation and ensure that the affected shopkeepers are given immediate relief, including appropriate compensation and access to alternative business spaces. They stressed that the government must prioritize transparent communication and engagement with stakeholders before any drastic enforcement measures are initiated.

The Lahore Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to stand firmly with the affected traders and continue advocating for their rights until justice is served and their source of income is restored.
