LOS ANGELES (Entertainment Desk) — Cricket took another major step toward expanding its footprint in the United States as Bollywood superstar and Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan officially inaugurated the new Knight Riders Cricket Ground in Los Angeles.
The opening ceremony marked a historic occasion for the sport, with the venue hosting its first major match between the Los Angeles Knight Riders and Washington Freedom. The event attracted cricket enthusiasts, local supporters and members of the South Asian community, highlighting the growing popularity of the game across North America.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shah Rukh Khan described the opening of the stadium as the fulfilment of a long-held dream. He said introducing cricket to one of the world’s leading entertainment capitals represented a landmark achievement for everyone involved in the project.
“What started as a dream has become a reality today. Bringing cricket, the second most-watched sport in the world, to Los Angeles is a landmark moment for all of us,” he said.
The actor and entrepreneur emphasized that the project was about much more than building a sporting venue. According to him, the long-term partnership between Knight Riders and Fairplex aims to establish a destination where sport, culture and entertainment can come together under one roof.
He said the venue had been designed to serve families, communities and cricket fans while also hosting entertainment events that would bring people together throughout the year.
“We are creating much more than a cricket venue. We are building a space that celebrates community, togetherness, energy and entertainment. It is a place built not just for sport, but also for entertainment, for families and for memories that will last forever,” Shah Rukh Khan added.
He also expressed confidence that the facility would become the permanent home of cricket in Los Angeles and inspire young athletes to take up the sport.
The newly built ground is regarded as the first international-standard cricket stadium developed by a global cricket franchise. It has been equipped with eight wickets on the main square, ICC-standard playing dimensions and six floodlight towers, enabling it to host high-quality day and night matches.
The stadium is expected to play a significant role in the continued growth of Major League Cricket, which has been working to establish cricket as a mainstream sport in the United States. The league has attracted several international stars over recent seasons and continues to expand its fan base.
