Beijing (Web Desk) – China has warned that it will take measures to protect its economic interests after the United States expanded sanctions targeting entities linked to Iran, including some in China.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing opposed unilateral sanctions and stressed that China-Iran economic cooperation was conducted within international law.
He said such cooperation should not be disrupted, while reaffirming China’s commitment to protecting its legitimate rights and interests.
The latest US measures come as Washington seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and encourage other countries to join its sanctions campaign.
China remains a major buyer of Iranian crude oil, making its energy and commercial ties with Tehran particularly important amid continuing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Beijing has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and argued that sanctions cannot provide a lasting solution to the conflict.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, meanwhile, warned that American sanctions could reach any entities considered to be violating US restrictions, adding further uncertainty for Chinese financial institutions and businesses dealing with Iran.
