Rs1 billion in contraband seized in record-breaking Year!
Our Correspondent recently interviewed Pirzada Muhammad Omar Qasmi, Additional Collector Customs Enforcement, who shared impactful achievements by the Lahore Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) over the financial year 2024-25. During the period several intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling smuggling networks and seizing smuggled goods. The ASO undertook multiple raids on warehouses and intercepted vehicles carrying substantial amounts of contraband and notified goods, showcasing the team’s meticulous planning and prompt action.
Major successes included the seizure of 38 smuggled vehicles, including high-value models like Lexus, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Land Cruiser V8, Toyota Vitz, Toyota Prius, Suzuki Swift, and Suzuki KEI. The estimated value of these vehicles was Rs. 337.85 million. Additionally, the ASO confiscated 29,586 kilograms of smuggled fabric worth Rs. 104.15 million and smuggled cigarettes valued at Rs. 151.42 million. Another major victory was the interception of 50,021 kilograms of smuggled betel nut, estimated at Rs. 136.45 million.
The ASO’s operations further encompassed the seizure of 62,100 kilograms of various smuggled goods valued at Rs. 37.77 million, 802 tyres worth Rs. 15.57 million, and electronic goods worth Rs. 45.23 million. Altogether, the cumulative value of these seizures reached Rs. 1,026.64 million.
Qasmi attributed the success of these operations to the dedication, vigilance, and strategic planning of the ASO teams. He stressed the importance of the intelligence network and collaboration with other enforcement agencies, which improved their operational efficacy.
The leadership within the Collectorate, particularly the support from the Collector Enforcement, played an immense role by motivating and recognizing the team’s hard work, thus enhancing morale and encouraging continued diligence.
Looking ahead, Qasmi shared plans to strengthen the ASO’s operations by expanding its intelligence network and incorporating advanced technology for more precise and effective actions. Continued training programs for personnel are planned to equip them to face new challenges in smuggling. The overarching goal is not only to intercept smuggled items but also to dismantle the networks behind these operations.
