SAN FRANCISCO (Tech Desk) – Apple has launched its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, in major markets worldwide, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to reshape the premium smartphone industry.
Priced at approximately $2,000, the device became available on Friday amid strong customer interest and limited supplies. However, launch-day crowds were generally smaller than those seen during some of Apple’s earlier major product releases.
The launch represents an important test for Apple chief executive John Ternus, who took charge in September. The company is entering a market already served by competitors including Samsung and Huawei, which have introduced several generations of foldable devices.
Demand for the Duo reportedly exceeded initial supply, with estimated delivery dates extending to late January shortly after pre-orders opened. Apple described the initial response as exceptionally strong and introduced purchase restrictions to manage availability.
The device has attracted attention for its design, large folding display and hinge technology. Early reviews have praised the relatively subtle screen crease and overall build quality, although some reviewers have raised concerns about camera limitations, app compatibility and the phone’s practicality when folded.
The launch has also generated interest in China, where some consumers have shown renewed willingness to purchase premium smartphones despite broader weakness in the market. Buyers in several countries faced restrictions requiring online reservations, while selected markets allowed limited in-store purchases.
Industry analysts believe Apple’s entry could accelerate mainstream adoption of foldable smartphones. Market researcher IDC has projected that the company could capture a substantial share of the category as demand for premium devices evolves.
However, the high price and limited availability could restrict early adoption. Apple must also demonstrate that its foldable design offers meaningful advantages over conventional smartphones and competing foldable models.
The iPhone Duo’s long-term success will depend on whether Apple can expand production, improve software support and persuade consumers that the folding format justifies its premium price.
The launch signals a new phase in the smartphone industry, with manufacturers increasingly competing through innovative designs as well as traditional improvements in performance, cameras and battery life.
