WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – Saudi Arabia appears to be expanding its ballistic missile production complex at al-Duwadimi, west of Riyadh, potentially paving the way for missiles with longer ranges or heavier payloads, according to researchers who analyzed commercial satellite imagery.
The assessment by researchers from the Foreign Policy Research Institute points to newly constructed buildings that may house missile motor casting pits and storage facilities. The suspected casting facility is significantly larger than the existing structure, suggesting a possible increase in production capacity.
The development could strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to deter potential attacks from Iran and reduce its reliance on foreign military suppliers. However, the expansion could also heighten regional tensions as Gulf countries continue investing in advanced missile capabilities.
Researchers said the facility’s characteristics appear consistent with Chinese missile production technology. Saudi Arabia previously acquired Chinese-made ballistic missiles, although the precise types of weapons that the expanded complex may produce remain unconfirmed.
Longer-range solid-fuel missiles could provide Riyadh with a more flexible strike capability because such systems can generally be stored for extended periods and launched more quickly than liquid-fuel alternatives.
The reported construction could also influence political discussions in Washington concerning proposed US-Saudi civilian nuclear cooperation. Critics of the agreement have raised concerns about safeguards against nuclear proliferation, while Saudi Arabia has denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
The facility’s operational readiness remains uncertain. Researchers indicated that installing specialized equipment could take several months, meaning production may depend on further construction and technical preparations.
The developments underscore a broader regional trend in which governments are strengthening missile and drone capabilities amid persistent security concerns. Whether Saudi Arabia’s expansion leads to a substantial change in the regional military balance will depend on the systems ultimately produced, their capabilities and the kingdom’s future defense strategy.
