UK to deploy Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia amid rising Houthi attacks

Britain plans to deploy Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia for defensive missions as escalating Houthi attacks raise concerns over civilian infrastructure, regional security and trade.

LONDON (Web Desk): The United Kingdom has announced plans to deploy Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to strengthen the kingdom’s air defences amid escalating attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The UK Ministry of Defence said the aircraft would conduct defensive counter-air missions aimed at protecting Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial threats. Officials stressed that the deployment would not involve offensive strikes against Houthi targets.

Alongside the fighter jets, Britain will provide a military transport aircraft to support the movement of defence equipment within Saudi Arabia. Military advisers will also assist Saudi personnel with operational coordination and defence planning.

Defence Minister Wes Streeting condemned the reported Houthi attacks, warning that strikes against key infrastructure, including Riyadh’s airport, raised serious concerns about civilian safety and regional security.

The deployment comes as tensions continue to rise across the region, with attacks on strategic facilities and disruptions to maritime activity increasing concerns over the security of vital trade routes and energy supplies.

Saudi Arabia has been involved in Yemen’s conflict since 2015, leading a coalition in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government against the Houthi movement. The collapse of a prolonged truce has renewed fears of a wider escalation.

The conflict has also drawn international attention because of the strategic importance of the Red Sea, a major corridor for global shipping and energy transportation. Further disruption could affect commercial traffic and contribute to volatility in energy markets.

Britain’s latest move underscores its security partnership with Saudi Arabia and its stated focus on defensive support. The scale and effectiveness of the deployment will depend on the evolving threat environment and coordination between British and Saudi forces.
