LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has said Pakistan has huge potential for Islamic and religious tourism, given its rich historical heritage, diverse culture and religious sites.
Addressing the 2nd International Islamic Tourism Conference, he said comprehensive research, a coordinated strategy and effective cooperation between the federal and provincial governments were essential to develop tourism into a significant contributor to the national economy. Pakistan’s history, cultural diversity and the legacy of different civilisations gave it a distinctive position as a tourism destination, he added.
The Speaker said better promotion and development of historical, religious and cultural sites could boost tourism and create new opportunities for economic activity. He noted that tourism had become an important sector of economies worldwide, but credible research was needed to determine the sector’s actual economic potential in Pakistan. Malaysia’s successful experience, along with that of other countries, could be studied to develop a practical strategy suited to Pakistan’s needs, he added.
Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan said stronger coordination, consultation and a coherent policy framework between the federal and provincial governments were necessary to effectively link tourism with the national economy. Despite challenges including terrorism and political instability, Pakistan continued to have significant domestic tourism demand, reflecting the sector’s considerable potential.
Speaking about Islamic tourism, the Speaker said research in the field should consider diverse views and perspectives and examine the relationship between Islamic, religious and cultural tourism, as well as their economic and social impact. He urged universities, academics and students to play an active role in tourism research and called for expert-led research teams to develop practical and implementable recommendations.
