LEEDS (Web Desk) – Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat in the opening Test at Headingley on Friday as England completed an emphatic victory by an innings and 103 runs after the visitors’ batting line-up collapsed for the second time in the match.

Pakistan, who managed only 171 in their first innings, were unable to recover after England piled up 409 and secured a massive 238-run lead. The visitors were then bowled out for just 135 in their second innings, bringing the contest to a disappointing early conclusion.

The result gave England a dominant start to the series and raised fresh concerns over Pakistan’s batting performance in challenging English conditions.

England build commanding lead
England took firm control of the Leeds Test after responding to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 171 with an imposing 409.

Harry Brook led the hosts’ batting effort with 91 runs, narrowly missing out on a century. Jordan Cox contributed 73, while experienced batter Joe Root scored 66. Dan Lawrence also played an important role with 51 as England steadily built a commanding advantage.

Pakistan’s bowlers faced a difficult task but Ali Usman emerged as the most successful, claiming five wickets. Khurram Shahzad picked up three wickets as Pakistan eventually dismissed England for 409.

However, the damage had already been done, with England taking a 238-run first-innings lead and placing Pakistan under enormous pressure.

Pakistan batting collapses again
Needing a major batting effort merely to force England to bat again, Pakistan instead suffered another dramatic collapse.

Captain Shan Masood scored 29, while Abdullah Shafique made 15 and Saud Shakeel contributed 14. Azaan Awais managed nine and Khurram Shahzad scored eight.

Salman Ali Agha was dismissed for four, while Imam-ul-Haq failed to open his account as Pakistan’s top and middle order struggled to withstand England’s pace attack.

Josh Tongue produced a devastating bowling performance, ripping through Pakistan’s batting line-up. Ollie Robinson and the other England bowlers provided strong support as the hosts maintained relentless pressure.

Pakistan were eventually dismissed for 135, well short of the 238 runs required to make England bat for a second time.

Pakistan’s batting raises concerns
The scale of the defeat will particularly concern Pakistan because the batting unit failed in both innings. A first-innings total of 171 was followed by an even lower 135, leaving the bowlers with little opportunity to bring Pakistan back into the contest.

The visitors struggled to build meaningful partnerships, while England’s bowlers consistently exploited the conditions and prevented Pakistan’s batters from settling at the crease.

England, in contrast, demonstrated greater patience and application with the bat. Four of their batters passed 50, underlining the difference between the two sides in adapting to the Headingley conditions.

What the defeat means for Pakistan
The innings-and-103-run defeat puts Pakistan under immediate pressure in the series. The team will need a significant improvement in its batting approach if it is to challenge England in the remaining Tests.

Pakistan’s bowlers showed glimpses of effectiveness, particularly through Ali Usman’s five-wicket haul, but defending small totals against a strong England batting line-up proved an impossible task.

For England, the comprehensive victory provides early momentum and confidence. For Pakistan, the priority will be to regroup quickly, address its batting failures and find a way to compete more effectively in English conditions.
