LAHORE – Lahore’s much-awaited Basant festival will return from March 12 to 14, 2027, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announcing the dates and promising a vibrant celebration of culture, colours, music and traditional festivities.

The announcement comes after Lahore witnessed the revival of Basant following an 18-year ban. The Punjab government had lifted the ban in December 2025, allowing kite flying under strict safety regulations designed to prevent deaths and injuries associated with dangerous kite strings and reckless celebrations.

CM Maryam Nawaz, in a post on X, said Lahore would once again come alive with “colour, culture, festivity, music, energy and legendary hospitality”. She invited young people from Punjab and across Pakistan to participate in the celebrations and encouraged overseas Pakistanis and international visitors to plan their trips to Lahore.

The 2027 Basant festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors and provide a major boost to Lahore’s tourism, hospitality, transport, food and entertainment sectors. Hotels, restaurants, event organisers, retailers and local businesses are also likely to benefit from increased activity during the three-day festival.

Strict safety rules for Basant 2027

The Punjab government has introduced detailed regulations governing kite flying and Basant-related activities. The measures are aimed at preventing the accidents and fatalities that previously led to the festival being banned.

Kite flying using dangerous or prohibited materials remains subject to strict restrictions. Authorities have also been empowered to take action against violations under the relevant laws.

The rules prohibit running, jumping or hanging over rooftop edges during kite-flying activities. Rooftops must not be overcrowded, while the number of people allowed on a rooftop cannot exceed its safe load-bearing capacity.

Event organisers have also been made responsible for managing crowds and ensuring safety arrangements at venues.

The regulations further prohibit loud music, DJ systems, high-decibel sound systems and other activities that could cause noise pollution or disturb public order.

Acts involving nuisance, harassment, obscenity, indecent behaviour or disturbance to neighbours and the general public are also prohibited. Such violations may attract action under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Safety arrangements are another key component of the regulations. Premises hosting kite-flying activities must have first-aid kits readily available. Building owners and event organisers can be held individually as well as jointly responsible in case of accidents or violations.

Why Basant is important to Lahore

Basant has deep cultural roots in Lahore and Punjab. The festival is traditionally associated with the arrival of spring, prosperity and good fortune.

Historical accounts link the popularity of kite flying during Basant to the era of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who reportedly organised an annual Basant fair and helped establish kite flying as a prominent part of the celebrations.

Over the years, Lahore became the centre of Basant festivities, with colourful kites filling the city’s skies and families gathering on rooftops to celebrate the arrival of spring.

The Punjab government’s decision to schedule Basant 2027 for March 12-14 signals an effort to revive the cultural tradition while placing greater emphasis on public safety and responsible celebrations.
