TEHRAN (Web Desk) – Iran has issued a strong warning following what it says was a Ukrainian attack on one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea, declaring that the incident will not go unanswered and reaffirming its commitment to defend its sovereignty.

The warning came after Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that an Iranian commercial ship had been targeted in the Caspian Sea, resulting in the death of one crew member. Iranian officials described the incident as a serious violation of international norms and pledged an appropriate response after completing their assessment.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Tehran holds Ukrainian authorities responsible for the attack. A ministry spokesperson alleged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the operation and said Iran would respond at a time and in a manner it considered appropriate.

The spokesperson condemned the reported strike, saying attacks on civilian or commercial vessels threaten regional stability and maritime security. Officials emphasized that Iran would pursue the matter through diplomatic and security channels while safeguarding its national interests.

Iranian Parliament Deputy Speaker Ali Nikzad also reacted strongly to the incident, describing the alleged attack as an irresponsible act that would not remain unanswered. He reiterated that Iran reserved the right to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty under international law.

Nikzad stated that any aggression against Iranian territory or Iranian assets, regardless of where it originated, would be treated seriously. He said Iran would continue to exercise its legal right to respond to threats against its security.

The latest tensions follow remarks made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who claimed that Ukrainian forces had targeted a Russian warship and had also struck an Iranian vessel operating in the Caspian Sea. Iranian authorities later confirmed that one of their commercial vessels had indeed been attacked.

The reported incident has further complicated already strained relations between Tehran and Kyiv, which have remained tense since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Diplomatic disagreements have intensified in recent years over regional security issues and military allegations.

Security analysts believe the incident could increase diplomatic friction between the two countries and raise concerns about maritime security in the strategically important Caspian Sea.

Although the Caspian Sea has generally remained insulated from the wider conflict in Eastern Europe, recent developments have highlighted the possibility of increased military and security-related incidents affecting commercial shipping in the region.

Iran has not yet disclosed the identity of the vessel, its cargo or the exact location where the reported attack occurred. Authorities are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials also have not announced what form Tehran’s response may take. However, government representatives stressed that any future action would be based on Iran’s assessment of the incident and its national security considerations.

International observers are closely monitoring developments, warning that further escalation could affect regional stability and commercial maritime activities in the Caspian region.

The incident comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions involving multiple regional and international actors, making diplomatic engagement increasingly important to prevent further deterioration in relations.

Iranian authorities have reaffirmed that protecting the country’s citizens, commercial assets and territorial sovereignty remains a top priority and that they will continue to respond firmly to actions they consider hostile.
