SHEIKHUPURA (Web Desk) – Three young siblings lost their lives after drowning in floodwater that accumulated when an embankment along the Bher Drain collapsed in Ferozewala, Sheikhupura district, raising fresh concerns over public safety and the condition of drainage infrastructure during the ongoing monsoon season.

The tragic incident occurred near Pathan Colony, where heavy monsoon rains weakened the embankment along the Bher Drain, allowing a large volume of water to spread into nearby residential areas. The accumulated water quickly turned the surroundings into a hazardous zone, particularly for children living in the neighborhood.

According to rescue officials, the three brothers, identified as Daniyal, Nauman and Burhan, entered the water to bathe without realizing its depth. Witnesses said the children were playing near the flooded area before moving into deeper water, where they were swept under and disappeared from sight.

Residents immediately alerted emergency services after noticing the children struggling in the water. Rescue teams rushed to the location and launched a search operation to recover the victims.

After an extensive rescue effort, emergency personnel pulled the children from the water and shifted them to a nearby hospital. Despite immediate medical attention, doctors pronounced all three dead on arrival.

The heartbreaking incident left the local community in mourning as relatives, neighbors and residents gathered outside the family’s home after receiving news of the tragedy.

Witnesses said the flooding occurred shortly after the embankment gave way, allowing water from the drain to spread rapidly into nearby streets and open spaces. Many residents claimed the damaged embankment had required repairs for some time and urged authorities to improve maintenance of drainage infrastructure before the arrival of heavy monsoon rains.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by rainwater accumulation and damaged embankments during Pakistan’s annual monsoon season.

Across Punjab and other provinces, heavy rainfall has caused flooding in low-lying areas, damaged roads, disrupted transportation and increased the risk of drowning accidents, particularly involving children.

Emergency officials have repeatedly advised parents to prevent children from playing near flooded drains, canals, rivers and rainwater ponds, warning that even shallow-looking water can conceal dangerous currents and sudden drops.

Disaster management authorities have also instructed local administrations to monitor vulnerable drainage channels, repair damaged embankments and remove standing water from residential areas to reduce the risk of accidents.

Local residents expressed frustration over what they described as inadequate preventive measures, saying regular inspections and timely repairs could have prevented the tragedy.

Several community members called on the district administration to immediately strengthen weakened embankments, improve drainage systems and install warning signs around flood-prone locations.

They also urged authorities to launch public awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of entering floodwater during the monsoon season.

Officials said an assessment of the damaged embankment would be carried out to determine the cause of the collapse and identify any negligence in maintenance or flood management.

The administration is also expected to review safety arrangements around drainage channels in Ferozewala and neighboring localities as heavy rains continue across the province.

The deaths of the three siblings have added to the growing number of rain-related fatalities reported during this year’s monsoon season, reinforcing calls for stronger disaster preparedness, improved urban drainage systems and greater public awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
