BEFAST (Sports Desk) –Ireland produced one of the greatest achievements in its cricket history by defeating India 2-0 in a T20 International series, securing a dramatic one-run victory in the second match at Stormont. The triumph marked Ireland’s first-ever bilateral series win over the reigning T20 world champions and handed India their first T20 series defeat since 2023.

The hosts entered the second match full of confidence after claiming a convincing 34-run victory in the series opener. Despite facing one of the strongest teams in world cricket, Ireland displayed remarkable composure to defend a competitive total and complete an unforgettable weekend for Irish cricket.

Batting first after winning the toss, Ireland posted 154 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. Harry Tector led from the front with a composed half-century in his landmark 100th international appearance. His innings anchored the batting effort as wickets fell at regular intervals, allowing Ireland to build a total that eventually proved just enough.

India’s bowlers kept the scoring under control during the closing overs, preventing Ireland from reaching a bigger target. However, the disciplined performance of the Irish bowling attack completely changed the complexion of the contest during the run chase.

Debutant spinner Jai Moondra made an immediate impact by dismissing Sanju Samson with the very first delivery of India’s innings. The early breakthrough shocked the visitors and set the tone for an outstanding bowling performance. Moondra quickly added the prized wickets of Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer, reducing India to 19 for three and placing the defending world champions under enormous pressure.

Matthew Hollard provided equally valuable support, consistently breaking important partnerships whenever India attempted to recover. His spell proved decisive during the middle overs, as he claimed three wickets and prevented the visitors from building momentum.

Although India continued to lose wickets, Tilak Varma kept their hopes alive with a determined innings that briefly shifted the pressure back onto Ireland. A rain interruption added further drama to the chase before India resumed requiring an increased scoring rate during the final overs.

Tilak accelerated with an attacking six early in the closing stages, but his attempt to repeat the stroke on the following delivery resulted in a catch that once again swung the momentum in Ireland’s favour. His dismissal left India needing a late rescue from the lower order.

Harshit Rana launched a spirited counterattack and brought the visitors within touching distance of an unlikely victory. The equation came down to eight runs from the final two deliveries, setting up a tense finish before a packed crowd at Stormont.

Ireland held their nerve under immense pressure. Harry Tector produced the decisive breakthrough when Rana attempted another big shot but found Tim Tector in the field on the penultimate ball. The catch sparked jubilant celebrations as Ireland completed a famous one-run victory and sealed the series.

The achievement was even more remarkable considering Ireland entered the series without several experienced players due to injuries. Key names including Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, and Josh Little were unavailable, creating opportunities for newcomers who responded with match-winning performances.

Jai Moondra and Matthew Hollard emerged as the stars of the series, combining disciplined bowling with fearless performances against one of cricket’s strongest batting line-ups. Their success highlighted Ireland’s growing depth and ability to develop new talent capable of competing at the highest level.

For India, the defeat serves as a rare setback for a side that has dominated T20 cricket in recent years. The visitors struggled to build partnerships throughout the series and were unable to cope with Ireland’s disciplined bowling and confident fielding.

Ireland’s historic triumph now ranks among the nation’s greatest cricket achievements. Defeating the world’s top-ranked T20 side twice in the same weekend has strengthened Ireland’s reputation as a rapidly improving cricket nation and provided another landmark moment in the country’s sporting history.
